The
Koran Society for Service in Asia (KSSA) was founded
with the purpose of sharing the love of Jesus
Christ with the brothers and sisters of Asia,
especially Indochina, by concentrating the resources
of mature Korean churches.
The KSSA was first founded in 1992 and in early
1999 received official status as a corporation
from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade
of the Republic of Korea.
The KSSA currently supports programs
related to leadership training and development;
technical training; poverty eradication programs;
medical support; and programs related to creating
a just and peaceful society.
The KSSA is concentrating its
programs to establish justice and peace in Asia.
As part of this program the KSSA has conceived
as its first step programs in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia,
and Myanmar; as a second step programs in China
and North Korea; and as a third step programs
in the Near East region.
Korea, as a country, is greatly
indebted to its neighbors in Asia. We ask for
your continuous support and contribution to the
KSSA's activities as we seek to share the spiritual,
personnel and material resources of the Korean
church with our brothers and sisters in Asia. |
| Objectives |
The KSSA has as its objectives
the task of supporting the development of the
social and ecclesiastical structures of countries
in Asia and Indochina through the sharing of
the spiritual, personnel, and material resources
of the Korean church and its Christians in service.
It also seeks to contribute to the elevation
of the standard of living in the human community
of Asia. Furthermore, the KSSA seeks to contribute
to the establishment of peace in Asia.
|
| Mission
Statement |
The KSSA firmly confesses and
proclaims that God is the subject of mission;
we witness to the love of God toward the entire
world (John 3:16); we mold ourselves after the
servant-hood of Christ (Mark 10:45); taking
on the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8);
and fully committing ourselves to the Mission
of God (Missio Dei).
The KSSA, in order to be faithful
to the Mission of God, will refrain from material-centered
mission activities, and in cooperation with
domestic and international mission organizations
and non-government organizations will seek to
establish and implement an ecumenical mission
policy.
The KSSA will devote itself to
evangelical mission through the application
of regional social development mission projects
in developing Asian countries.
The KSSA, in order to serve all
nations, will maximize the recruitment and development
of mission resources.
|
| Priorities |
1.
Children and Youth Education Activities -
Support for orphanages, children's
homes, elementary education facilities and other
education facilities.
The children and youth are of great importance in
the activities of KSSA. The nurturing, protection
and mission on behalf of children and youth is a
future oriented mission activity. Most of Asian
society is centered around the adults, and as a
result the situation of children and youth in society
has reached a critical state. The KSSA has already
initiated education programs for children and youth
in Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar with great success.
|
2.
Social Education Activities - Programs to
combat illiteracy, computer training
and occupational skills training.
In order for a society to attain a stable development,
it requires specific social skills and abilities.
Of those skills and abilities, the skill of reading
and writing is essential. Also, in countries where
industrialization is just beginning and social manufacturing
mechanisms weak, most require training in various
technical skills and occupational skills in order
to maximize income. The KSSA has established social
education institutions for young adults and women
in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and is continuing
in providing support for their programs. |
3.
Medical, Health Related Activities - Basic
Medical and Health Activities
A great majority of the people living in developing
countries suffer from the pains of physical illness
and there is a great lack of medical and health
facilities which can care for their suffering. This
situation is worse in the rural and remote areas
of these countries. The need for clean drinking
water, the acquisition and intake of fresh food
are essential for the daily livelihood of the people,
and the prevention of disease as well as providing
basic knowledge for hygiene are very important.
The KSSA, in association with the Amity Foundation
is participating in the medical and health related
activities in China. |
4.
Leadership Development Activities - Training
of theological students, lay
leaders and agricultural leadership
Leadership is a very important and essential part
of social development. The selection, training and
development of leaders who possess wisdom, honesty,
insight, perseverance, morality and the skill to
instill a vision in the people is a long and difficult
process. Most countries in Asia have previously
lost the opportunity to nurture and develop efficient
leadership in the past because of their history
of confusion and conflict. The churches of Asia
are in special need of leaders who have received
formal theological training. The KSSA has conducted
training programs for developing leaders in the
field of theological students, lay leadership and
agricultural leadership in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam
with great success. |
5.
Activities on Behalf of Women - Women Protection,
Women Education,
Activities for Increasing Household Incomes
In any society, women, are the most marginalized
and suffering class. Women are wives and mothers,
the basic foundation of a healthy and strong family,
and also an important contributor to social production.
However, the rights of women are easily infringed
upon in the household and they are the victims of
low wages. Although women comprise the majority
in the church and fulfill the major roles in its
mission and service, they have been excluded from
its leadership. The KSSA has conducted a program
to develop women leadership in Cambodia, and continues
to support the necessary facilities for this program. |
6.
Activities for Social Environment
Superstition and lack of knowledge; gambling and
speculation; drug abuse and a distorted conception
of sexuality; abuse of women and children and inhumane
polity and tradition; and unsanitary social conditions
are the norm for developing and under-developed
countries. It is imperative that we engage in the
alleviation of such social conditions from a missiological
social development perspective. |
7.
Activities for Environmental Protection and the
Integrity of Creation
Because most developing countries center their development
efforts in the field of industry, concern for environmental
protection is limited and the threat to the integrity
of creation as a result is great. It is important
for the church to address the issue of development
within the boundaries of preserving the integrity
of creation. |
| Structure |
| The
KSSA, as a non profit corporation officially recognized
by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of
the Republic of Korea, is comprised of a Board of
Directors, a General Assembly comprised of 140 member
churches, 40 individuals, and has sectional committees
and special committees for the establishment and
implementation of policy and programs. |

* Establishment of Long Toan
B Basic School and Continuing Exchange
In June of 1996, the KSSA helped
to establish an elementary school with twelve
class rooms in the village of Long Toan B, Duyen
Hai District, Tra Vinh Province. The establishment
of this school has allowed more than six hundred
of the village's children to receive education
in a satisfactory environment.
The village of Long Toan B is located
to the South West of Ho Chi Minh City and it takes
six hours by bus to get there. The village has
about nine thousand inhabitants. It is a coastal
village and most of the arable land has a high
concentration of sodium, making it difficult to
be productive. As a result, many of the children
are forced to work in the fields, in order to
uplift production, and thus are deprived of an
opportunity for education. The establishment of
an elementary school in this village was the first
successful development project undertaken by the
KSSA in Indochina. Construction of the school
buildings was begun in 1994 and was completed
on May 10, 1995, and a dedication ceremony was
held on Jun 6, 1995. The KSSA continues to assist
and support this school. The KSSA, specifically
supports the funding needed to pay the allowances
of the school teachers and also supports the operation
of a Kindergarten within the school premises.
In 1999, the KSSA supported the funds needed for
providing electrical power to the school.
Construction Costs : $487,000

Campaign to Irradicate Illiteracy and Programs to
Increase Household Income Cyclo
Project : As part of the program against poverty
in the city of Vinh Long, Vinh Long Province,
the KSSA found thirty individuals in the Ward
Four area who were healthy, yet unable to find
work, and in August of 1995 rented to each of
them a cyclo. With the cyclo, the individuals
were able to work, and with the income they would
be able to pay for their livelihood, and save
the remaining money. With the savings that they
put aside, they would then buy a cyclo to another
individual who was unable to find a job, thereby
empowering their neighbor, at which point the
original cyclo that had been rented to them would
become their possession. And the concept of this
project is to continue in this mutual empowerment.
There are 1,333 families in the Fourth District
with 13,485 people as of August 1995. Among this
number 4,300 are of working age, yet 600 of them
are without jobs. Vinh Long is situated to the
South West of Ho Chi Min City and it takes five
hours by bus to get there. When the Cyclo Project
was reviewed after a year's time, it was discovered
that an individual could earn as much as 20 US
dollars a day, and during a year's period, twelve
new cyclos had been obtained, enabling twelve
new individuals to work. Also, after 1995, the
region's mode of transportation shifted from bicycles
to motorcycles, and so the KSSA, instead of increasing
the number of cyclos began to provide sewing machines
to the women and to train them in the use of the
machines.
* Official Registration
as a Non Government Organization with the
Vietnamese Government
On March 1, 1997, the Vietnamese government allowed
the KSSA to be registered as an official Non Government
Organization through its regional coordinator
Kim, Deok-Kyu.
* Love Class
Ever since 1996, the KSSA has been supporting
the Vihn Long Evangelical Church's education program
for unschooled children, which is being conducted
in an annex of the church building. Currently
25 students in three classes are being educated.
Also, this education facility teaches basic social
behavior, as well as providing free health examinations,
free hair cuts, and free snacks for the children,
thereby helping to support the wholistic development
of the children from its neighborhood.

was begun on April 15, 1997 and was completed
on July 23, 1998. The kindergarten currently holds
203 children in 3 classes with 13 teachers and
2 staff. The kindergarten also teaches the mothers
how to read; traffic safety; management of healthy
teeth; and general instruction on increasing the
household standard of living. The KSSA is in the
process of providing financial support for economically
difficult families so that no child will be excluded
from its right to learn.

School, which was first established by the Korean
Pastoral Support Association. This school trains
students in computer skills, English, Korean,
and the Khmer language. Since it began in October
of 1996, it has been registered with the Ministry
of Society and Labor of the Cambodian government
and is operated as a Non Government Organization.

* Program to Irradicate
Illiteracy
The KSSA has been conducting a campaign to irradicate
illiteracy, in cooperation with the CCWA, since
1999, and currently operates 12 education centers
in Kampong Cham Province, Kampong Tham Province,
Kandal Province, and the Calmette region. Because
of the long war and the genocide, and the following
rule of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia faces a great
lack of capable leadership and many are illiterate.
Many of the Cambodian people in the rural and
remote areas cannot read or write, and as a result
they miss out on opportunities to enhance their
standards of living.
The program currently conducted by the KSSA is
not only a foundation for forming relationships
to conduct evangelism, but a project to enhance
the overall sense of identity of the people and
to enlighten them(for example in the areas of
AIDS prevention, hygiene, human rights and civil
rights). Also, most people are ignorant about
the threat of diseases such as AIDS, as well as
their legal rights and ways in which they can
legally protect themselves. Through this program
the KSSA is contributing to the empowerment of
the Cambodian people so that they can increase
their level of participation in the areas of civil
rights, learning to organize civil communities
and to live a more humane and dignified life.

is currently supporting 50 individuals since 1996,
who are participating in the Rural Medical Facility
Workers' Training Program. This program was begun
by the Amity Foundtion under seven year program

This program focuses on providing medical aid
to rural areas and mountain areas.

Province, which is Part of Simao District has
2 million 300 hundred thousand inhabitants, of
which 61% are from minority nationalities and
the poor number 1 million 10 thousand. According
to a 1996 statistic there are 999 administrative
villages, 1,415 rural villages. Of those only
9992 have a medical staff on hand, 753 have an
emergency aid room without resident staff, and
7 have neither. Of the 992 medical staff 9.2%
are females and 81.1% are males. Of these only
4% have received even a short period of formal
